What to Do If Your Digital Certificate has Expired

The old ListenUp Digital Certificate expired on August 30, 2008! Here is the Free Solution.

Background Information

ListenUp is a Java Applet that records audio. Only "signed" Applets can record audio. Applets are signed using a digital certifgicate.

Our old digital certificate from Thawte expired on August 30, 2008. Applets signed with that certificate will no longer be able to record after that date.

We have purchased a new certificate and re-signed all our old JAR files on August 17th, 2008. If you downloaded the SDK after August 17th, 2008 then you don't need to do anything.

What Do YOU Need To Do?!

Basically you need to replace the old JAR files on your server with new re-signed JAR files.

  1. Locate the "listenup/codebase" folder on your server that contains the ListenUp JAR files.
  2. Decide which SDK to use:
    1. If you have a file there called "listenup_license.txt" or "listenup.lic" then you can either:
      1. Upgrade for free to our latest SDK. It contains our latest JAR files that have been re-signed with a new certificate. Download it here.
      2. OR, if you are concerned about upgrading you can just use the same old version of ListenUp that you have already been using. Look here for the version that corresponds to what you have installed on your server. If you are not sure what version you are using, look at the date of the "listenup/codebase/JavaSonicsListenUpUnsigned.jar" file on your server. The JAR file date may be a few days before the SDK date. Or look in the Java Console for the ListenUp version number.
    2. OR, if you do not have a license file then you will need to use this SDK from 2006-11-09. It supports the "credit" system.
  3. Unzip the SDK. Check the date of the file "listenup/codebase/JavaSonicsListenUp.jar" in the SDK. It should be 8/17/08.
  4. Use FTP or other technique to copy only the JAR files from the SDK to the "listenup/codebase" folder on your server.
  5. Try using ListenUp on your server. You will probably be asked to grant permission to the certificate. Click on the button to view details of the certificate. The expiration date should be in 2010.
  6. If you have questions, contact us.

What Happens When this New Certificate Expires?

Thawte, the company that sells certificates, has recently added support for "timestamping". This means that any JAR files signed now, before the certificate expires, will still work after the certificate expires. So these new JAR files will always be valid.

Sorry for any trouble this has caused.
